The electrical question is where a lot of hot tub purchases quietly get more expensive than the sticker suggested. A spa that needs a dedicated 220V circuit is not just the price of the spa. It is the price of the spa plus an electrician, plus a permit, plus whatever it costs to run conduit from your panel to your backyard.

What 110V Gets You
A 110V hot tub, often sold as plug-and-play, runs off the same kind of outlet your kettle uses. No electrician, no permit, no trenching. You unbox it, fill it, plug it in.
The trade-off is power budget. On 110V the heater draws roughly 1.5 kW, which means the tub heats more slowly and, on many designs, the heater and the high-speed jets cannot both run at full tilt at once. In practice this matters far less than people expect, because almost nobody heats a hot tub from cold on demand. You hold it at temperature and it sips power to stay there.
Two things to check on any 110V install: the outlet should be on a dedicated circuit, not shared with a garage freezer or a string of exterior lights, and it needs GFCI protection. Both are cheap to sort out and neither requires rewiring your house.
What 220V Gets You
A hardwired 220V circuit roughly quadruples the power available to the heater. The tub recovers temperature much faster after a long soak or a cover left open, and the heater and jets run simultaneously without compromise. For a large tub used heavily through a BC winter, that is a genuine comfort difference.
The cost is the install. A licensed electrician runs a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit from your panel to a disconnect box within sight of the spa, and the whole thing gets permitted and inspected. If your panel is full or the run is long, this gets expensive fast. Get the quote before you buy the tub, not after.
The Trap: Models That Only Do One
Most brands split the lineup. The small single-pump models are offered as 110V, and everything above that is 220V only. That means the electrical decision is bundled into the size decision, and you can end up buying a smaller tub than you wanted purely to avoid the electrician, or paying for an electrician purely to get the size you wanted.
