Running Cost, Answered
Roughly $10 to $40 a month depending on the season and whether you are on 110V or 220V, at BC Hydro's Step 1 and Step 2 rates of 10.97 and 14.08 cents per kilowatt hour. A traditional acrylic tub with a foam cover typically runs $25 to $75.
The cover, mostly. Heat rises, so the majority of a hot tub's heat loss goes out through the top. A foam-core cover absorbs water over its life and quietly stops insulating, which is why running costs on a conventional tub climb every year while a rigid cover holds its value.
Not meaningfully cheaper to hold at temperature, which is what a hot tub does most of the time. 220V recovers temperature faster after heavy use and lets the heater and jets run at full power together. It is a comfort difference more than an energy one.
No. Reheating from cold costs more than holding temperature, and a powered-down tub in freezing weather is how plumbing gets damaged. Leave it running and keep the cover sealed.
