Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland get more genuine winter than the south Island, particularly as you gain elevation toward the mountain. That makes the cover the most important component on the spec sheet rather than an afterthought, for two reasons.

First, heat loss. Most of a hot tub's heat escapes through the top, so the cover is what decides whether you run at the bottom or the top of the $10 to $40 per month range through January. A foam-core cover absorbs moisture over its life and quietly stops insulating, which is why running costs on a conventional tub climb every year. Second, snow load.
